Strutt & Parker Yield Survey results: Harvest 2020
Strutt & Parker carries out an annual yield survey to provide analysis of the performance of combinable crops each season and to identify trends over time.
For harvest 2020, the data came from 137 farms managed by Strutt & Parker’s farming department, covering a total of nearly 50,000ha.
The farms were mainly located in the East of England, Midlands and South East England.
It was a season that threw up significant challenges for arable farmers, with a wet autumn hampering drilling in autumn 2019, followed by the wettest February on record and then the driest and hottest spring in UK records.
Key results were:
- Average winter wheat yields were 7.4t/ha, which was 25% lower than in 2019 and 15% below the five-year-average.
- Winter barley yields averaged 6.6t/ha, 24% lower than in 2019 and 12% below the five-year average.
- Winter oilseed rape yields averaged 2.4t/ha, 30% lower than in 2019 and 24% lower than the five-year average.
