Five things you can do to make your farm safer

Farming is demanding – physically, mentally, and logistically. But taking just a few moments to think ahead can help prevent serious accidents and keep your team safe.

Ahead of Farm Safety Week (21-25 July 2025), here are five practical things you can start doing today:

1. Pause for thought. Before taking action, particularly if it involves doing something unusual or risky, take a moment to consider what can go wrong and who could get hurt. A few minutes of planning can save a lifetime of regret.

    2. Falls from height is one of the leading causes of fatalities in farming. Do not start any work until you have the right equipment for the job. Plan work appropriately – does it really need doing urgently now? Respect the risks and don’t take shortcuts.

    3. Injuries from cattle caused most fatalities in the UK last year. Avoiding complacency is crucial here, as all animals can be unpredictable. Use handling systems and get help. Don’t turn your back on animals and consider the risks to the public should rights of way go through your farm.

    4. Vehicles and machinery are a significant hazard. Make sure your equipment is fit for purpose, everything works as it should, people are trained to use it, and that the right protective equipment is provided and worn.

    5. Fatigue, stress, dehydration, and mental health struggles all impact your ability to think clearly and stay safe. Take breaks, eat well, drink water and talk to someone. You are the farm’s most important asset. Treat yourself like one.

Whether you’re new to farming or five generations in, safety is everyone’s job. Let’s keep each other safe – and keep your farming business running successfully.
